We have microscopes that are capable of cross polarization (cross nicols) for examination of birefringent specimens using polarization microscopy techniques as described in optical mineralogy courses.
In the study of geology, rocks and minerals are identified by use of the polarized light microscope. Geologists may use the transmitted light polarized light microscope, or may use the incident light polarized light microscope. The incident light is for thick polished rock and mineral specimens, as it is opaque, and the polarizing light must be shown from above. In the transmitted light version, the rock and mineral specimens are thin sections, thin enough for light to pass through them. The light is transmitted thorough the birefringent mineral specimen. In both incident and transmitted light polarization, both a polarizer and an analyzer are used, plus a Bertrand lens. The polarizer first polarizes the light and the analyzer is the second polarizing filter. They are turned on angles, and the angles precisely measured.
Most minerals and rock thin sections are viewed where these polarizing filters are at 90 degree angles to each other. This is the cross nicols, or cross polarization condition that is used in geological studies in optical mineralogy.
